Geocaching is a good activity that fits in with Camping. Geocaching is a World Wide game that involves folks using a hand held GPS (Global Position System) receiver unit to hunt down 'Caches' that other folks have hidden out in the wilderness. As for me and my daughter, it also gets us out of the house on weekends when the time does not allow a full on Camping trip. It's a great Outdoor Activity and it's all explained pretty well in the link I provided in the Collection of Links board here. The Topic is "Geocaching Official Site". That Link is now a Sticky in this board right here.
Check it out. And when you have some Geocache stories to tell, let us know about them here in this Activities Board.

DD and I have been pretty busy recently with this Geocaching game. It's a lot easier to get out geocaching than it is to get 3 or more days off from work to actually Camp. Besides that, geocaching can be more easily done in the winter time than camping can. At least we don't have to stay the night out there in the cold to geocache. We can go Home to warm up! NovemberAnyhow, busy we have been with it. On the 4th of November I went ahead and Restored a lost cache that the owner didn't maintain. Then on the 15th, DD and I went to a park near here and got 6 of 7 more that we hunted. 2 of those, I never even got loaded into the GPSr unit and we still found them. On the 21st, I found one a half mile from home. Then on the 26th (Thanksgiving, right before dinner) I found the one we couldn't find on the 15th. On the 28th, we found 3 more caches located in the same park as the one I now own. The next day (29th) we went after another 7 caches in a park where more have been added. We came up with 6 of the 7. Turns out the one we missed was missing... more on that later. December12-5-09 comes along and I go after another park that has 8 more caches in it. I came up with 7 of them and vowed to have DD with me the next day to try that one again. Hmm... As it turns out, Nobody found it yet that day. An FTF (First to Find) opportunity for us? Indeed. The next day (the 6th) we actually met up with another couple of cachers also trying to find this elusive cache. And who should actually come up with the find? None other than my DD herself! ;D So we now have our first FTF under our belts. On the 6th is when I learned that the one we missed from the 29th of Nov. has been replaced and is good to go. So on the 12th of Dec. DD and I go for it. Oh wait... she said it was too cold!!! OK, so I got that one myself. That brings us to today, the 13th of Dec. I had to go back to that cache again today, cause I forgot to drop off a TB (Travel Bug) while I was there yesterday. DUH! Oh well, at least today DD decided she'd come along this time. Meanwhile, I remembered a couple more caches that were pretty much along route back to Limestone. So we got them today as well. And with these two caches today are some clues that we now have to seek out two more caches, a mini series in a Multi Cache that depended on finding the ones we found today. I know this might be getting to be a little confusing (at least the way I'm telling the story now...) but this really has kept us in the great outdoors lately a lot more than camping could ever do at this time of year. I'm also learning a bit more on how to use the GPSr needed for this game. The Multi Caches involve setting the coordinates Manually into the device, something I didn't know how to do before today. Now that I understand that, we have 2 more caches to hunt next weekend. I've since lost track of my find count from earlier this year (in my mind) but we are now at 50 finds! Looking back on my logs at the cache site, I see that we've found 27 caches since the 15th of November. That's almost a cache a day!! Holy Crap!!! Yikes. Like I said, we've been pretty busy with this cool game, and we can get even busier yet. I just pulled up a Map of the area we call Home and there are 60 caches on the map. If I filter out the ones we found it goes down to 38. Filter out the one I own and that has us at 37. 37 more caches to find that are right close to home. Shall we even consider how many more are out there where we'll have to travel a little bit to get to??? JanuaryAw that VERY hot place.... I suppose I should work on December yet, huh? The month ain't yet half over!!! ;D
