Well, i've talked to the wife, and i can purchase a new toy when i get home from my business trip to Nebraska at the end of May, now just to find the right one, looking for an older body styled (late 80's) Jeep Wrangler, either stick or automatic, but most definitely a 4x4

I was wondering about a Second Vehicle for y'all. Good Luck with the Jeep. 4x4 would be nice to have at times. I might be looking to upgrade my truck a little too pretty soon. If we do it, it'll be a move up to a cab and a 1/2 version of our current TV that is one year newer and has a V-8 instead of the V-6. Also, it's a lot prettier to look at. We'll get to that in another topic. But for this topic, I want to wish you good luck in finding what you want to get. I can easily see you being comfortable driving around in a Jeep!

I'll add my 2 cents to this... If your going to get a jeep try to find a late 80's YJ (or Cj/TJ what ever ?J they were then) as it will have a carb and leaf springs instead of the newer ones with coil springs. If you need something with a bit more room then the CJ, look at trying to find a full size cherokee (again up to mid 80's) failing those or if your DW (dear wife) wants something newer, I would suggest getting an XJ (cherokee) over the ZJ (grand cherokee). The XJ has the widest range of transfer cases besides the CJ. Let me know what your looking for, I'll find a few sites for you, run by (internet) aquaintenses (sp?) of mine, these guys go all out either for trail or speed use of JeeP's. Here's a link that will show a repair I did to my XJ's floor, this is after about 5 yrs on Ontario road salt. www.billhughes.com/snowXJ/To CC: If your going to replace your current tv, why not go all out and try to find a quad cab, instead of the cab and a 1/2.?? I know my cab and 1/2 is small once we all get loaded into it, 2 boys and dog in the back, ok the dog sits in the back, on the console and on the wife, but he starts out in the back between the kids.

Yup, after last weekend I'm sure the wife really does want you to get a jeep! ;D Uh, what's the one in the barn gonna take to make it street legal? Hopefully, you mean just plates and insurance. Hope it's a good deal for ya. Snow: $$. That's the big reason a cab and half will be just fine for us. With just the 3 of us, it'll be large enough. Bad thing is though, I'm gonna lose some bed space. 6 1/2 foot instead of the 8 footer I have now. The full four door trucks are far too new for my price range yet. And the old ones that are around here are dilapidated, rusty and hardly road worthy. Perfect for my Farm perhaps, but not the highways with my camper in tow. Oh, and he already said he's lookin' for a late 80's Wrangler. Jeeze dude, pay attention.

OK, Craig. Since we've already hijacked Bryan's topic here (sorry man...) does your's have an 8 in it? Assuming it does, how's that tow and what kind of mileage do you get from it? My 6 Will tow and get it up to highway speeds but she struggles to get there and sometimes struggles to keep up at 65 MPH or so. She'll do it, but I gotta have the foot near to the floor most of the time. Towing in OD (overdrive) is Out of the question and I can maybe expect 10-13 MPG is all. I've heard that a smaller 8 will get about 15 or maybe a little better even while towing. I should have listened before I bought it, cause I was told. "A large 6 works harder than a smaller 8." Man, that is so true.

well, the jeep i was looking at the owner's started taking apart for scrap ah well i'll have to keep looking. Craig, what i'm looking for is a jeep (89 or older the new one's just look like they'll fall apart the first time i go off road) i don't really know enough about mechanics to say ok its good or no its not based off of spec's. Scott, What it needed was well, alot, new sheet metal to make up the exterior and to round out the roll cage, then it would need to have a place made to hold the plates.

If you google "bill Hughes" the guy who is still hosting those pics I linked too, you see on his home page that he a links to other peoples websites.. I know most of through a news group, everyone of them is helpful and knowledgeable in everything JeeP. You'll find lots of useful info to help you know what to look for and what to try and avoid when you go "shopping", like tranfer case's, front and rear diff's (yes there are ones that are highly sought after) mod's and so much more.

OK, Craig. does your's have an 8 in it? Assuming it does, how's that tow and what kind of mileage do you get from it? Mine has the big 8, 350 (thinks its the 5.7???), it tows my large Pal. with no problems (still haven't installed that tranny cooler), as you can see from the pics its an ext. cab short box. If you look around you can find ext. cab's with a long box, but I prefer the short box (less junk). Don't qoute me but I think I'm getting about 15 mpg while towing and around 20 while just highway crusing (sans trailer). One thing to watch with these trucks is after 92 they switch tranny's and went to the 4L60-E, while based on the 700R4 (92 and older, until it gets to the TH700) the 4L60-E does/did have known problems, a quick google search should tell you lots.. definately want to install a tranny cooler.

Ya Snooze, Ya Loose! Y'all have heard that one before, right? Well, I just made the call this morning to 'in earnest' pursue that upgrade of a truck for me. And the result of my call? SOLD! <booming, thundering voice> Well, dren!
OK, now that I'm out of the hunt for the time being, back to our Regularly Scheduled Bryan's Topic about the Jeep.

well, time for attempt number two. Tomorrow morning i'm going to go look at a older Ford F-150 it needs some work, (the transmission is shot) but the guy that told me about it has a transmission sitting in the barn waiting for me. All we (he as i suck at mechanics) to swap it out, switching it from a automatic to a standard.

All we (he as i suck at mechanics) to swap it out, switching it from a automatic to a standard. Yikes! Good Luck with that, my friend! Do y'all know what all that job entails?
New hole in Floor for the Shifter. (easy part) New hole in Firewall for the Clutch linkage/Pedal. (not quite as easy) Linkage installation for same said Clutch. (even more Complicated) Potential Bell Housing conversion. (Engine to Trans.) They're just a Different assembly here.... Remove Torque Converter and Replace with Clutch Assembly. (see Above line) Drive Shaft Difference. Involves Drive Shaft Length and U-Joint replacements... (more complicated than what at first may seem...)
Unless this guy is Real Good... this is NOT a job that's gonna yield you a new truck in a single day. There's also the fact that ya may have to convert the Brake Pedal as well. Depending on the vehicle, you'll need to make Room for the new clutch pedal by replacing the Automatic's Brake Pedal. Yet Another complication to this entire job. This is NOT a simple conversion. I'm just sayin'.

Speaking from Experience. In the late '70's my dad started this project on a 1965 Mercury Comet Caliente Convertible. (things were easier back than?) I later inherited that car... and neither one of us ever got that project finished. Circumstances different for sure... but Project is still the same.
Again, Good Luck!

Hey there...
We've since talked about that F150 of yours and you still had a couple of minor things to do.
Uh... How's that coming along?
