I am interested. Hopefully we can get to know one another well enough and be able to make our paths meet at some time for your class.
My real first intro to GSAK was at an event and the activities involved at an event pretty much precluded having a real learning experience take place. A one on one or a Small Group setting that is Focused on learning GSAK is something that I think would be a far better learning experience.
Let me know if I can at all be of any assistance in making something happen here, OK?
Thanks!

Let me know if I can at all be of any assistance in making something happen here, OK? Thanks! OK, here is how we do it! Let's have a small meeting at a local library or something with wi-fi and a conference room. I went to an event once that was on paperless caching, and that was too much. My soccer coaching duties are almost over (woo-hoo!) so my weekends are getting free again. I would suggest Saturday, November 13 as a good date. I have commitments until then, and this gives us time to get it announced here on the forums, and get a library room set up. I am in Bolingbrook, and I know I could get some space for us here, but that might be too far north for some people. Do you want to contact your local library and see if we can get a few hours in a conference room on the 13th? Lastly, if you have any specific questions about how to do something, ask me! I might know how to do it. I have done a lot of trial and error, and have a pretty good handle on GSAK now.

This looks good, and hopefully we can get more folks to join us. The 13th of November should be well enough in advance to get something going with this. I'll see about getting into GSAK again, and coming up with a list of questions of what I think I need to learn. (I can start by trying the multiple data base thing...) Maybe one of us can host this as an Event Cache at the GC site? Or would that be a bit strange since this appears more heading toward a class room type of thing? Just thinking a little... but that might boost interest/attendance some.

Just thinking a little... but that might boost interest/attendance some. My only worries about this are 1) limiting the number of attendees to something manageable and 2) the varied skill levels of GSAK. But, if we find a place to hold it, we know how many people we can hold, and we can state from the beginning that this is a basic class.

Argh, I was actually hoping that you would have something to offer as well. Are Sunday afternoons any good, or do you work then too?
BTW, SR... I work Sat. mornings, so this will have to happen in the Afternoon if Sat. and also in the afternoon on a Sunday if the date get's moved. Church. Just got back into it, and will not take a Church day off for a hobby. Sorry, just can't justify that. (heck, not even thinking that Libraries are even open on Sundays, huh?

I can't do Sundays either. Church & family day. I am doing a scout event until lunchtime on the 13th, but it is still a good day for me in the afternoon.

OK, here's what I'm thinking now at this point. Since Bryan can't make it, it looks like I'll be the only attendee so far. (Kaye too, but...) So my point is that I hope you can find a place that's convenient for you and I will be willing to travel a bit. Also, I call him my Spokesman for a reason. But if he can't attend, I hardly see it fair to have him look for a place near us. I'll plainly admit that I'm no good at stuff like that myself, so I won't do it. After all, that's why he's the Spokesman! Anyhow, so I'll do the driving for this class if it comes together. Meanwhile, I'm gonna have to get back into the GSAK program and trial and error a few things regarding the multiple databases. From there, I should compile a list of topics/questions that I would have and would like to get out of the class. For sure, I'll be bringing along a Note book for sure! This leads me to another issue I might have. You mention Wi Fi. Well, I do not own any sort of Wi Fi enabled devices. My only portable version of GSAK is on a laptop that would need to be hard wired to the internet via the Ethernet cable. Easy to connect at home, not so easy to do on the road. It worked in a Hotel in Nebraska back in February, but I also found it to be VERY Slow as well. Now I imagine that you want the Wi Fi internet so that we can get to the GC Site, yes? That makes sense to me, as we'll likely be talking about how to get geocaches from the site onto the GPSr's. At home, I have this covered. Garmin and the GC Site working together have made that operation a Breeze! (that operation was Horrible with the Magellan units!)
So take all of this in, and please advise. If I need to upgrade any hardware, I'm afraid that it's likely that I won't be able to. I can bring the laptop, but I'm not sure how relevant it's version of GSAK even is. It's certainly not the same as what I'm using on the main PC at home. As for an Official Event Cache, I have an idea of how to host it and list it as a Basic Class only with XX amount of capacity available. Whoever ends up "owning" the Event Cache could very well use the name "geocachekankakee.com" as the Owner. Bryan did that before in July and we had an OK amount of attendees that did not get to be too much. He owned it and I was able to claim a Smilely as the co-host/Attender. What ever happens with this one, I'd be honored either way. I can get an Even Cache owned under my belt, or I can have another Found It as well. Either way, I hope this pans out, and that I might learn a thing or two about GSAK. PS, Check your PM's here.

OK, for location - I will call my local library tomorrow. I am in Bolingbrook, so it is a small hike for you all, but hopefully not terrible.
Wifi is so we can do a few things: 1) Get on GC as needed. 2)Get onto the GSAK web site to grab some of the macros
I can download the macros I use and put them on either a CD or a USB drive. I can tell you that they are safe, but I don't know if swapping a thumb drive around is a good idea. Of course, I could post the links for the macros to the event page so people can grab them at home first, too. That might make more sense.
Lastly, I am only leery of hosting an event only because I have never done it before! That is why I am trying to make someone else do it! I will give it a try, though. I will set it up on GC after I make sure we have space at the library for the 13th. I am in Scout training until lunchtime, so I am planning the event for 2:00 PM.

Great, and Thanks again!! I will DO the travel. As for the Event. I Will Host/Own it. No problem!! I have an idea and plan on how to do that so that you are not Overwhelmed as the Teacher. Let me know ASAP the Exact Local and Venue so that I can set that up at the Event Cache's Official Listing. Also.... Let me know the Capacity Limits of the number of folks that you/we can handle. Biggest reason I was backing off before was that I didn't want to step on Your toes since you're gonna be the Teacher. I've never Hosted an Event either (not 100% anyhow...) but I am willing to take this on as a challenge. At the GC site, I will "Own" the Event Cache. You will get the Smiley for getting another 'Attended" log. We both win in a way, the way I see it anyhow. That's what Bryan and I did when we co-hosted our Events back in July. With that in mind, I want to give you Credit as a co- host since you're willing to set up the venue and be the Teacher. That said, when the time comes near look for this to be an Event Cache that will list geocahekankakee as the Owner. (that also will lead more folks to the Site and Forums we have here. ~ Bryan's good idea as well.) As this comes closer to fruition, please stay in contact and give me all the info that I'll need to set up the Official Event Cache listing at the GC Site. I am SO looking Forward to this!!!! ;D

Bryan works weekends, Joe has all sorts of free time.... and I work 6 days a week.
Man! This just isn't meeting up so well, huh? Argh! I Know that you would be there if you could, Bryan. Don't fret... I know a Job is pretty important during these times!
Joe, thanks for the Local Offer. A pre Event trial run could be good, ya know? With us getting together with Bryan, I might be better prepared for the Event Class.
We have a Denny's Restaurant nearby the I-57 Exit # 315 if this would work somehow. I'm available on Nights on weekdays other than Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Something a little more that I can offer. Hope it might work out?

I went and found Beverly on my 40th birthday... It was a good day! I also hid a GC and 2 TCs that day in the park as well. And if you all don't go get FTF on some of your local caches, I may head down that way tomorrow! There is also a TB hotel that I want to check out, Boar's Nest or some crazy name like that... Pfft!

Beverly. Is that the Oldest cache you were you were telling me about, Bryan? Joe, what's a TC? Might need to add that to the Acronym list that we're still working on here.

yup thats the cache, and TC is a TerraCache, www.terracaching.com/ its another form of geocaching, i tried it but i like working off of one site, kinda why i'm not a fan of waymarking.

Cool, I Remembered Beverly. Still want to get that one sometime, if we can. TC. Terra Cache? Like Wherigo Caches and/or Letterbox caches? (Letter-boxing, I think...) I'm sure there are other Varieties, but I'm with Bryan on this theory. It's just so much simpler to stick with the Main GC Site that we should all be familiar with. Not a fan of the other varieties? Shoot! I've never found the Time to even Learn about the other varieties.
